Public Speaking Is Changing

Will the world of public speaking, theater, and live events ever be the same post-Covid-19?

All of our meetings, presentations, conferences and even cocktail hours are Zoom these days, right?

As the weeks go on companies are figuring out how to turn large conferences into cost-effective webinars– and maintain attendance and engagement. Maybe it’s not necessary to all be in a room together?

What are the benefits of in-person events versus virtual? No, really… And, what are the costs?

It feels better to be in person in some ways, right? It’s a more fluid, human interaction that gives us all those pleasurable connection hormones.

But, I don’t know about you, I’ve gotten used to the walk from my bedroom to my home office. Going all the way across town, dealing with traffic and parking and cramped quarters with people I don’t know…. it just doesn’t seem as appealing as it once did.

And, of course, on top of that the very practical issue of possibly contracting the virus.

When will you feel comfortable going to a large in-person event next?

There’s no way to tell. But it’s my sense that public speaking and live events have changed irrevocably forever.

Whether we see this as good news or bad news, the reality is that no matter what happens with events and speaking it is ALWAYS going to be a human being on the other side of the camera transmitting their voice, body and energy out into the world. That will never change.

We are amazing creatures– us humans. We’ve built this amazing technology to connect and communicate.

And, it’s time now to let that technology support us. Time to return our attention to the very human issues that keep us from connecting and communicating the ways that would feel best and produce the best results.

More than ever, your voice is powerful. Let’s free that powerful voice of yours.
